Abstract

The 1871 Agro-Industrial Exhibition of Córdoba was the first of its kind in Latin America, although it has not been recognized as a significant milestone in national history. Amid debates over the country’s productive model, discussions centered on cattle ranching geared toward exports versus intensive agricultural development focused on industrialization, the domestic market, and European immigration. The event, featuring product displays and demonstrations of modern machinery, drew attention from numerous countries and enabled exchange among Argentina’s fourteen provinces for the first time. Beyond its continental significance, it reflected the federal spirit of its promoters, President Sarmiento and his minister, Avellaneda. The study of the Exhibition analyzes its characteristics and the challenges it posed, incorporating a perspective on scientific and technological advances in the United States and Europe.
