Unravelling the determinants of job performance in manufacturing SMEs: evidence from an emerging economy

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between human resource practices, job satisfaction, organisational commitment, and job performance among manufacturing SME employees. A total of 179 respondents were purposively sampled, and data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Results revealed a significant relationship between human resource practices and job satisfaction and organisational commitment. Job satisfaction positively influenced organisational commitment and job performance. However, no significant relationship was found between organisational commitment and job performance. These findings highlight the importance of effective human resource practices for enhancing job satisfaction and commitment in manufacturing SMEs. Implementing strategies such as evaluation, rewards, and training can foster commitment and improve performance. This contributes to knowledge about these dynamics, emphasising the need for HR practices that enhance employee satisfaction and commitment for better job performance. Future research should explore industry-specific factors and additional variables impacting this relationship.
