Abstract

The paper examines the underlying factors driving the implementation of ISO 9001:2015 in South Africa's cement manufacturing sector. Despite widespread adoption of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard in South Africa, the country's cement manufacturing sector remains plagued by quality issues. Purposive sampling was used to conduct a survey from 18 November 2019 to 7 February 2020, and 38 responses were obtained from ISO 9001:2015 accredited companies. Exploratory factor analysis identified two factors, namely improve business performance and gain competitive advantage, as reasons for ISO 9001:2015 adoption from 12 items. The research identified two major challenges affecting ISO 9001:2015 adoption: poor management commitment and a lack of cooperation. The study offers a variety of theoretical implications for scientists wishing to advance the field, as well as practical implementation for businesses embarking on a journey to implement ISO 9001:2015.
