Effects on project performance: a quantitative analysis of team characteristics

This study examines how team characteristics, resource qualifications, and communication affect project performance in product development. A matrix-based approach, in conjunction with a series of experiments, was utilised to investigate the impact of team composition, communication, and resource qualifications on project performance. This investigation was conducted using data from a medium-sized automotive company in Germany. The findings indicate that an increase in resource qualifications is associated with a reduction in task completion time. Conversely, insufficient qualifications and high task volumes result in resource stacking and delays. The impact of communication factors was found to be limited, presumably due to the proximity of the teams. The study shows that having the right resources and qualified people improves project performance. It suggests a matrix-based approach to assess these relationships. It provides practical insights for optimising project management and suggests directions for further research on team structures and communication in complex environments.
