Beyond the models: a case study of the management of epistemological issues in teaching a globalisation and the world economy subject seven years after the start of the global financial crisis

Abstract

The paper reports on a 'second year subject - globalisation and the world economy' - taught in 2014, before the end of quantitative easing and seven years after Lehman Brothers closed. Most economists failed to predict the global financial crisis (GFC) or revise their teaching subsequently. The taught subject shows a way to manage student's engagement with this failure by focussing upon epistemological issues and avoiding any pretence that it was simply a mistake, by contrast with what the lecturer now says in hindsight. The course was a success, evident from student remarks and participation, and formal evaluation.
