Abstract

Building in reliability into a new product is costly and the implication of unreliability costlier. Determining the desired reliability performance, and defining the specifications that will achieve it, is a challenging topic in new product development. In an earlier paper, the authors developed a conceptual model for decision-making with regard to product performance and specification in a general context. In this paper, the model is used to describe the process of establishing the desired reliability performance and deriving the reliability specifications that will ensure the desired performance.
