Proposal of a performance measurement system for the evaluation of scheduling solutions

Abstract

Despite a plethora of studies and commercial solutions proposed, scheduling is still considered as one of the scientific areas where further substantial improvements can be gained by the development and application of new research approaches. However, industrial practitioners show a heavy reluctance in embedding this knowledge into their decision-making processes, because mainly they do not have the right means for evaluating the real benefits they can get from their adoption within their industrial processes and understanding which solution can provide better results according to a pre-defined set of performance metrics. In such a context, this paper illustrates the implementation of a Performance Measurement System for the Evaluation of Scheduling Solutions (PMS-ESS), which derives from a larger initiative, developed in the context of the Special Interest Group 4 on Benchmarking and performance measurement of scheduling systems, established within the IMS Network of Excellence. The paper shows also an industrial application in an Italian brake-maker firm.
