Abstract

This paper aims to argue that action learning is a viable option for application within executive management training and development programmes since the learners already possess knowledge of business principles, have extensive experience as managers and face problems on a day-to-day basis that they can directly apply to their organisations and take action upon. The objective of this paper is to discuss the possibilities and options for blending and integrating action learning as a pedagogical approach in executive management training and development. We develop an integrative perspective and model of action-learning. A case example is presented in order to illustrate the application of this action learning model within a specific management development course setting. We discuss some of the lessons learned and the practical implications and caveats in using this modified action learning approach in an executive management development course.
