Abstract

This paper empirically investigates the performance of transfer students from two-year colleges to four-year institutions at the course-level, especially colleges with significant minority student population. Advantages of looking at transfer student's performance at the course level are; transfer courses are prerequisites to an academic major and are sometimes used to screen applicants before they join into competitive programmes. Our results suggest that there is no significant difference of where a student received their lower level courses as long as they maintained good performance. Also the study recommends intervention for students who are admitted with lower GPA irrespective of the college they transfer from especially in quantitative subjects such as economics so that they can receive maximum academic benefits.
