Realigning performance measures: case studies in Irish industry

Abstract

The measurement of performance in manufacturing organizations is moving away from being primarily financially oriented, and being realigned towards the use of "balanced" systems that mix both financial and non-financial measures. The extent to which a balance of measurement is being achieved in practice is examined within one segment of the Irish automotive component sector using a Performance Measurement Questionnaire (PMQ). Analysis of the PMQ results is carried out in conjunction with determination of the prevalence of new manufacturing philosophies such as world class manufacturing (WCM) in the firms surveyed. Initial results indicate that organisations further along the WCM route use performance measurement systems that combine both financial and non-financial measures.
