Abstract

Mobile wallet technology offers the advantages of convenience, flexibility, and lower cost in mobile payments. The current study reviews the mobile wallet literature in different countries in order to investigate drivers and barriers in the usage of mobile wallet in Oman. Open-ended interviews and secondary resources have been employed to identify mobile wallet drivers and barriers, and understand the present status in Oman. Commonly reported barriers in Oman include security, awareness, dedicated merchants, and financial supports. The acceptance and usage of mobile wallet among consumers requires further investigation in particular with respect to developing countries like Oman. This may be one of the first attempts to explore the research conducted in mobile payments across a number of emerging economies and investigate the service provider perception with regards to mobile wallet in Oman.
