Abstract

The present study proposes an integrated model based on the theory of diffusion of innovation (DOI) and perceived risks to empirically examine the mobile payment adoption behaviour of users in India. The study also explores the moderating effect of performance risk and financial risk on the relationship between behavioural intention to adopt mobile payments and the intention to recommend the same. The study extended the theory of DOI with two significant constructs namely performance risk and financial risk. For conducting the study, the primary data was collected from offline bank customers. Structural equation modelling was used to test the relationships between the proposed variables. The results indicate that relative advantage and compatibility significantly influence behavioural intention to adopt mobile payments while observability, complexity as well as performance risk and financial risk do not carry a significant influence on the behavioural intention. From a practical perspective, our results support the crucial roles of compatibility and relative advantage in determining the behavioural intention of users to adopt mobile payments.
