Abstract

The participation of women has increased in various areas of society. Most women are not only housewives, but now participate as workers contributing economically to the family support. Some of them are owners of their own business, or in other cases occupying commanders in various organizations. There arecountless studies on women and their surroundings, but most emphasize family violence or women in an inferior position, among other factors that include a series of variables on women. But, there exist no known gender studies focused on the businesswoman and the working environment in which they operate. The present study aims to identify the qualitative profile of the Coahuila businesswoman. We examine the reasons they undertake the business, the conciliation between family life and labor, discrimination and perceptions around these issues. The methodology has a mixed quantitative-qualitative approach, using two instruments validated by Foundation for the strategic analysis and development of small and medium enterprises (FAEDPYME), and by the school administration and environment management (ESADE), Spain. The survey comprised a sample of 103 women entrepreneurs of micro, small and medium-sized companies in the sectors of service, trade and industry of the State of Coahuila. The data were processed using descriptive statistical techniques. The results show Coahuila business women are on average between 40 and 55 years age, mothers with over half having some level of University studies. They are determined to empower themselves every day in the economic development of the State, showing micro most familiar vision of consolidation and growth. They are active women, trained, independent and self-sufficient innovative with determination and attitude to face the challenges and differences that day to day struggle to demonstrate their abilities, skills and knowledge that even many men do not recognize. This information will form the basis for a proposal for actions for public policies in support of the entrepreneurial woman.
