Abstract

The book, Standard Workers, Non-Standard Workers, gives empirical evidence on the manner in which the Japanese labor markets maintained long-term employment and the increase in the number of non-standard workers was counterbalanced by the decline in the informal sector such as the self-employed. The present study extends the data from 2007 to 2012, and confirms that the aforementioned phenomena are observed even after the financial crisis. However, the decline in the informal sector might depend on a compromise on the revision of the questionnaire in the Employment Status Survey, which reveals that non-negligible of the employees are unaware about the length of their employment contract.
