Ottoman Oils And German Empire: The Missed Opportunity Of Turkish – German Relations

Abstract

Ottoman Empire could not be a part of the economies that grew by industrial revolution in the 19th century and also could not have the technology, education and capital that needed to get benefit of its own resources. In such a period, Germany's approach to the Ottoman Empire, was different and more friendly from other industrialized states. Without doubt one of the most important fruits of this relation was Baghdad Railways concession. This railway line concession, which goes over Mesopotomian oil fields, got Russia, France and Britain alerted. As a result of industrialization, the need for oil in these empires increased and this made them stare at Mesopotamian oil resources with thirsty eyes. The winner of the rivalry was Germany. However German Empire couldn’t get benefit of this treasure worth opportunity. One of the main aims of this study is including the works of western writers in addition to the Ottoman archive documents. By doing this it was aimed to synthesize different literatures on the subject.
