Abstract

This article aims at explaining the three dimensions of pilgrimages, namely: functionalist, religious - secular and secularising and at illustrating them by using extracts from the in-depth interviews taken to several pilgrims. I have also aimed at explaining the notions of communitas and liminality mentioned by Victor Turner in the pilgrims’ experience, the extent to which they are found in their experiences and the way they influence them or not. I have equally presented theoretical concepts that contradict them with the purpose of illustrating the complexity of the experience of the ritual, the excitement of the pilgrims’ experiences and the need for spirituality and detachment from the fundamentalist religious dogma.
