The aim of this study is to identify the social and environmental contribution of recycling cooperatives in the management of solid waste after use. This study is an exploratory and qualitative research, developed through multiple case studies conducted in four cooperatives that function as Central Screening of Selective Collection Program in São Paulo. The evidence sources used were interviews, direct observation and documentary research. Research has shown that cooperatives play a significant role in the reverse channel of municipal solid wasteand in mitigating the environmental impact caused by waste, include: increasing the useful life of landfills and the resulting decrease in pollution caused by the improper disposal of waste, reduction of energy expenditure, and decreased extraction of virgin material. Addition to improving the working conditions of its members.
