Abstract

Health service staff experience high levels of occupational stress, that are greater for nurses who work within the critical care environment such as the emergency department. This study was carried out to identify potential sources of stress for nurses working at the triage service within the emergency department in an Italian hospital. Ethnography was the methodological framework used to explore triage practice, with participant observation and non-structured interviews to triage nurses. We identified many sources of stress, caused by the phenomenon of over-crowding and the interactions with superiors and patients
