Remesas internacionales y altruismo en el contexto de la pandemia de COVID-19

Abstract

La crisis sanitaria originada por la pandemia de COVID-19 tendrá repercusiones en todas las esferas de la sociedad. Los estragos potenciales en el envío de remesas eran poco alentadores al inicio de esta crisis; sin embargo, los montos de remesas internacionales que México ha recibido durante la pandemia no han cumplido las expectativas. Buscando dar respuesta a este comportamiento aparentemente inesperado de las remesas, el propósito del artículo es encontrar una explicación que emane de los fundamentos teóricos que la literatura señala respecto a las motivaciones que los migrantes tienen para enviar remesas. Empleando un modelo probit y datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares (ENIGH) de 2016 y 2018, los principales hallazgos sugieren que el altruismo es la motivación principal que explica el comportamiento de las remesas ante escenarios de crisis de salud que experimentan los hogares de origen de los migrantes.
