Importance of Onion Diseases in the Main Producing Basin of the Sahelian Zone of Niger

Abstract

Onions are the leading vegetable crops in Niger, and are mainly used for human consumption and subregional trade. During the 2024–2025 vegetable growing season, 69 fields from five main production areas in the Tahoua Basin were surveyed for onion diseases. In each field, 40 plants were randomly selected for evaluation in order to cover the entire field. Five diseases were identified: Fusarium wilt, pink root disease, soft rot, Alternaria leaf spot, and black rot. The first three were very severe in the Konni-Tamaské area, while the latter two were severe in the Bazaga and Tounfafi areas. This study generated information that can be used by several actors in the onion value chain, including students, researchers, and decision-makers for the development of crop development programs.
