Abstract

Teachers consistently strive to design and implement instructional practices that lead students to acquire knowledge and skills while also fostering critical thinking—thereby contributing to the development of future citizens with a democratic consciousness. A key element in this educational effort is the use of worksheets, a versatile tool that promotes active student engagement, cultivates critical thinking skills, and strengthens the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application across all subject areas. This study aims to investigate the effective use of worksheets specifically in the teaching of Natural Sciences, exploring their contribution to the learning process as well as the factors that facilitate or hinder their implementation. The research findings, derived from ten semi-structured interviews with primary education teachers, reveal predominantly positive perceptions of worksheets, which teachers employ to teach various units of Natural Sciences in both printed and digital forms—either by adapting existing materials or by designing their own. Participants indicated that incorporating worksheets into Natural Sciences instruction enhances conceptual understanding, reinforces the gradual consolidation of knowledge, connects scientific concepts to students’ everyday experiences, cultivates critical thinking, encourages active participation, and fosters learner autonomy. Finally, teachers identified significant challenges to their effective use, particularly limited instructional time and insufficient laboratory equipment.
