Abstract

This paper contributes to the understanding of how income inequality shapes preferences for income redistribution policies (fiscal and social) in Mexico. Using the median voter hypothesis, the study provides a nuanced examination of these preferences across national and income decile levels. Our findings reveal an overarching predilection for fiscal policy at the aggregate level and yet a distinct inclination toward social policy among individuals in the lowest income deciles. Moreover, the analysis identifies a detrimental link between inequality and economic growth, with the most adverse effects concentrated within the lowest income segments.
