Abstract

The 2022 indigenous strike in Ecuador was one of the most significant protests in recent years, surpassing even that of October 2019. The article examines this event to study the socioeconomic factors that could have provoked social outburst, particularly in the context of the dismantling of social protection policies. The most relevant ones are the loss of purchasing power of production, lower income possibilities in urban areas, the effects of indebtedness, depopulation, and migration. The analysis of these dimensions leads to the conclusion that the farmers are trapped in a dead end regarding their subsistence and reproduction. This aggravates the living conditions in the countryside and creates incentives to abandon small-scale agricultural production, which would be very dangerous for the future in terms of food sovereignty or security.
