Abstract

This paper revisits recent debates among post-Keynesian economists about the characterization of different growth regimes. Its starting point is the typology suggested by Dünhaupt and Hein (2019), which is especially interesting for the study of peripheral economies as it stresses the role of the external sector in economic growth. It is argued that regimes in which the contribution of net exports to growth remains negative for long periods are unsustainable and this reflects structural problems in the pattern of specialization. The productive structure matters and this argument are illustrated by the growth and structural changes in Sweden and Uruguay between 1870 and 1939.
