The aim of this paper is to explore the nature of the R&D activities carried out by firms located in Mexico, and the type of basic research that these firms demand from the universities and R&D centers in the country. This paper is based on empirical research at the firm level and presents two case studies: (i) a large Mexican firm that carries out R&D and has a followership technology strategy in a context of a latecomer country, and (ii) a global firm, which follows a leadership technology strategy, that is located in Mexico under the maquila scheme, and has stared to carry out R&D activities in Mexico. Based on this evidence, this paper discusses the type of basic research required by these types of firms, and explore the implications of establishing a model for science development that is demand oriented.// Este trabajo analiza la naturaleza de las actividades de investigación y desarrollo (ID) realizadas por empresas en México y la demanda de investigación básica que generan para las universidades y centros de ID.
