Abstract

El ensayo de Sebastián Edwards constituye una aportación notable al tratamiento sistemático y riguroso de un problema que ha preocupado durante largo tiempo tanto a académicos como a gobernantes: las fluctuaciones y las tendencias del comportamiento del tipo de cambio real en los países en desarrollo. Se establece claramente en el ensayo la noción de como desde un punto de vista teórico factores de desequilibrio fundamentales y macroeconómicos afectan la dinámica del tipo de cambio real y lo que es más importante, se desentraña en el terreno empírico cómo afecta cada uno de esos factores el comportamiento del tipo de cambio real en un grupo de países en desarrollo. En este ensayo el trabajo teórico se combina hábilmente con estimaciones empíricas meticulosas a fin de proporcionar una base sólida para el avance de nuestro entendimiento de las economías de los países en desarrollo. En consecuencia, mis comentarios se ocupan principalmente de algunos aspectos del ensayo que en mi opinión requiren mayor aclaración...
