Abstract

This paper provides an overview of studies that tackle the regional repercussions of the workings of the banking system, including of course the most recent contributions to the study of the link between finance and growth. Its main objective is to highlight the essential, non-neutral role played by banks in regional economic growth, not just because of the supposed existence of information asymmetries and market failures that break up regional lending markets but also because there are spatial/regional differences in the lending strategies of banks which affect the supply and availability of loans at regional level.
