Abstract

Acknowledging that nanosciences and nanotechnologies form a strategic focal point for competitive innovation in regions, the article describes and analyses the dynamics between scientific production in areas and their regional context characteristics when studied from the transfer perspective. The makeup of the institutions and organisations that «scientific producers» are attached to is a pivotal aspect in this sense. It is also essential to take the global characteristics of the region into account. These create certain transfer conditions which may either be favourable or adverse. Scientific production and transfer form a binomial explaining which may shed light on the scope of innovation potential existing in this field for the Basque Autonomous Community and this could provide useful criteria for policy making. Approaches modelled on quantitative and qualitative methods have been used in this research. The leading producers of scientific articles on «nanos» have been interviewed, with a large number also having completed a survey.
