Abstract

This paper measures the influence of the European integration process’ on the Basque economy. It is an investigation undertaken by assuming that the challenge of attempting to isolate the results of the integration process from other potential factors of influence presents a significant obstacle. Following analyses of the effect since Spanish accession on levels of trade, production levels, foreign direct investment flows and budgetary return levels, we reach the conclusion that the process of European integration has had a positive overall effect on the Basque economy. One indicator of this positive overall effect is the fact that Basque per capita income has increased during this period when compared to the EU average per capita income. However, it would seem that the integration process has not had such a marked influence in the Basque Country, in structural terms. .
