Abstract

This paper analyses three major challenges facing the European Union, and undoubtedly how the EU reacts to these will determine its very future. First, institutional reforms must be implemented bearing in mind the current level of economic integration; the paper then argues in favor of strengthening the degree of political union within the EU. The second challenge refers to the need to stimulate sustainable EU economic development, while the paper focuses on both the strengths and weaknesses of the Europe 2020 growth strategy and the 2014-2020 Financial Framework. Finally, the paper explores the further enlargement of the EU and how the existing obstacles might be overcome.
