Abstract

Economic globalization is associated to processes of restructuring of production and territorial reorganization in which corporations and state actors and agencies activate their own resources in order to be able to compete in an ever more integrated world economy. Whereas until 1960 Bilbao constituted the only industrial center in the Basque Country, the provinces of Álava y Guipúzcoa have increased their industrial power since then. Today, the Basque region presents itself as a poli-centered spatial structure with the potential of working as an economic unit with global reach. After discussing the globalization of the Basque economy in historical perspective, the policies of internationalization and FDI, the recent reindustrialization, and the foreign trade networks, we focus on the port of Bilbao, which can be compared to those of New York and Los Angeles in terms of raw tonnage in imports and exports, and could therefore be considered a regional/national node with global functions.
