Abstract

In this study we present the existing theoretical economic approaches that formalize the relationship between human capital, productivity and growth, as well as the empirical evidence concerning the validity of the models. The most relevant conclusions with respect to the empirical evidence are that (i) concerning the relationship between human capital and productivity the empirical evidence suggests that investment in human capital is directly and positively related to increases in individual productivity, (ii) with respect to the relationship between human capital and growth, empirical studies indicate that the impact of human capital on growth is clearly positive given that increases in human capital enhances the adoption of new technologies. The tecnological channel seems to be crucial in order to understand the effect of human capital on growth
