Abstract

The article makes a regional analysis of the relationship between competitiveness and the creation and destruction of employment in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country during the period from 1990 to 1995. It starts from a study made by the author, analysing the economies of location (one of the main factors in the region¿s competitiveness) which existed in 1990 in the local production systems (LPSs) of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. It goes on to examine the development of employment in LPSs and then examines whether or not the systems considered competitive in 1990 - and therefore those which were in theory best positioned at the beginning of the period - were those which subsequently performed best.
