Abstract

This article shows the two main drawbacks that afflict the current measures of the economy under two headings: Their quality and their relevance as a faithful picture of the economic reality. As it concerns to the first, and taking the national accounts as the system of economic information most important and used, there is a lot of statistical, conceptual and valorative problems that, together, amount to produce a huge distort in the image of the economic reality these accounts attempt to show. Moving to the question about the relevance of this data, the article rises many doubts about the real meaning of the national accounts according the desired one because they have an increasing tendency to fail as providing a true picture of the economic reality: the economic welfare a society can enjoy thanks to the economic activity. It is argued that the fulfillment of this objective requires not only a betterment of the economic data but an extension and deepening of the theory of value, because behind any economic measurement there is always a theory of value.
