Abstract

The introduction, last 1st January 1993, of the Second Directive on Banking Coordination is going to produce considerable consequences for European financial institutions, although these will only reach fuil development if the Monetary Union is attained. In this sense, although the recent problems the Maastricht treaty has been going through have questioned the juridical framework in which the third phase, the objective of which is somehow establishing a unique European currency, is to be attained, such an objective is still valid and it is ever more supported by all the economical agents. From this point of view, we shall first anal:yze the consequences which couid eventually arise for the banks within such.an Economic and Monetary Union, and, secondly, we shali make a brief but revealing review of some of the principal effects such a Union may produce as regards to the financial policy of the Basque Autonomous Community.
