Abstract

Without doubt, small and medium-sized companies occupy an important position in the industrial structures of all countries: they contribute considerable to the renewal of a countrys industrial structure, they create new jobs and contribute to technological innovation and they have more flexibility than big corporations to adapt to changes. This article is an approach to the importance of small and medium-sized industrial companies in the development of frontier areas between Spain, France and Andorra. For this purpose, the number of newly-set up companies, their size, the localization of their activities, the sectors to which they belong, the number of jobs created and the industrial investment they have undertaken are all analyzed, as this is one of the most important variables in the strategy for economical development in any territory. They provide basic decision-making knowledge, they have to adapt to circumstances in constant evolution, and the changes they originate are a mean to measure the industrialization of a concrete geographical area.
