Toward a low-carbon freight system: E-UAVs as an emerging transportation solution

Abstract

As an emerging freight transportation solution, electric-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (e-UAVs) exhibit substantial application potential and carbon reduction prospects. However, their dynamic diffusion within freight systems and its environmental impacts remain insufficiently understood. this study develops a system dynamics framework that models freight systems across three dimensions: transportation modes, network hierarchy, and energy structure.The framework simulates the dynamic diffusion of e-UAVs within freight systems and evaluates their carbon reduction contribution during this diffusion, overcoming the limitations of previous studies that focus solely on the emissions of e-UAVs. Furthermore, a phased implementation insight, including short-term priorities, medium-term strategies, and long-term visions, is proposed to balance immediate emission reductions with sustainable long-term development. The findings provide evidence-based insights to support strategic planning for a sustainable freight transition.
