Identifying environmental factors related to pedestrian crash frequency across age groups

Abstract

Understanding age-specific patterns in pedestrian crashes is important for developing equitable and human-centered urban safety strategies. However, existing pedestrian safety studies have mainly focused on the objective features of the built environment, while paying comparatively little attention to how pedestrians visually perceive and experience their surroundings. Accordingly, this study investigated spatial and perception-based environmental factors correlated with age-specific pedestrian crash frequency, using 11,220 pedestrian crashes recorded from 2015 to 2020 across 223 signalized intersections in Taipei City. Using Street View Imagery (SVI) and SVI-derived perception indicators related to walkability, perceived safety, greenness, pleasantness, and bikeability, the study integrated objective environmental attributes and perception-based streetscape measures within a Multiscale Geographically Weighted Negative Binomial Regression (MGWNBR) framework. The analysis focused specifically on how the objective and perceptual characteristics of intersection environments are associated with pedestrian crash frequencies across different age groups and spatial contexts.
