Analyzing data sharing willingness in intelligent connected vehicles: An integrated model using privacy calculus and trust-risk framework

Abstract

Intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) can greatly enhance individuals' travel experience, but the privacy issues arising from data sharing during use may introduce uncertainty to their development. Therefore, based on privacy calculus theory and the trust-risk framework, a hybrid choice model is constructed to analyze the data sharing willingness and inherent decision-making mechanisms of ICV users, encompassing personal attributes, latent variables and scenario attributes. The results indicate that perceived risk and trust significantly affect data sharing willingness to a similar extent. Additionally, improvements in information transparency and service quality increase the intention to share data. However, data sharing willingness decreases for those who have experienced privacy leakage in other usage scenarios because of risk and trust transfer. Moreover, the increase in data dimensionality heightens users’ sensitivity to information, resulting in a significant decrease in the willingness to share data. Based on the above findings, several policy implications are provided to address privacy concerns related to ICVs.
