International cargo charter operations and preighter performances in the context of COVID-19: a case of China

Abstract

•Temporary deregulation and preighter promotion rapidly expanded international cargo charters.•From 2020 to 2021, charter flights pivoted toward overseas inland hubs and maritime gateways.•Freight forwarders' truck-to-air networks extended airport catchments to ∼56 h.•Preighter charters shifted toward more globally dispersed, long-haul routes.•Preighters surpassed freighters in 2021 in resilience and efficiency.
