The moderating effect of national culture on the relationships between antecedents and attitude and intention for AI adoption: A meta-analysis

Abstract

Individuals exhibit significant differences in their attitudes toward and intentions to adopt AI, and these variations are systematically associated with national culture values. However, the role of national culture in AI adoption fails to be clearly explored in previous research. Therefore, we conduct a meta-analysis involving 85 samples to examine how an individual's attitude and intention for AI adoption develop drawing on Behavioural Reasoning Theory and Hofstede's national cultural dimensions framework. Our results show that the reasons for AI adoption, including perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived value, social influence, trust and positive anticipated emotions, are positively associated with individuals' attitudes and intentions to adopt AI, while the reasons against AI adoption, including perceived risk and negative anticipated emotions, negatively predict these outcomes. We further find that collectivism, femininity, uncertainty avoidance and short-term orientation moderate the relationships between some antecedents and individuals' attitudes toward AI adoption.
