Health and culture in an African society

Abstract

Medical practitioners should try to identify cultural practices, and classify them according to whether they are beneficial, harmless, uncertain or harmful. Cultural beliefs about disease causation in Ganda society fall under the following categories: magical, supernatural, infectious and hereditary. Examples of each category and methods of treatment are mentioned, with special reference to mothers and children who constitute a very vulnerable group as well as forming the majority of the population.
