Abstract

The design of savings and loan policies in Ghana relies on a full understanding of the time preferences of Ghanaians. Using a probit regression, we find that individuals with neutral or future-oriented time preferences are more likely to save, while those with present or moderately future-oriented time preferences exhibit lower likelihood of saving. With regard to loan-taking behaviour, our results reveal that individuals who are neutral, moderately future-oriented or future-oriented are more likely to take a loan, while those who have present-oriented time preferences exhibit a lower likelihood of loan-taking.
