Market development and production organization in the financial service firms of the 1990s

Abstract

The service sector has recently been characterized by the introduction of new technology and fundamental changes in the market. The purpose of this article is to discuss future changes in the organization and the mode of production in the financial services industry. A futurological method is used to assess the future market situation and the strategies of the firms in the industry. The problems of this method are also discussed. The futurological study resulted in a major scenario referred to as "Financial high-tech, large-scale production" and two minor scenarios, "Sectorial Sliding" and the "Investment Society". Developments in the organization of production are discussed on the basis of these scenarios. The most probable development will see a standardized mass production system in which the customers act as self-service producers.
