Abstract

This paper addresses the question of how to nurture externally acquired small technologybased firms. An illustrative example is provided by two large Swedish firms, Saab Scania and Perstorp, both of which acquire and nurture small technology-based firms. Both companies have also established separate venture development units, Combitech and Pernovo, for this purpose. Over time the two venture organizations have developed in rather different ways: Combitech has demonstrated its strength in nurturing and developing internal ventures, Pernovo in nurturing externally acquired technology-based firms. The paper discusses the differences between the two organizations, as well as the resulting performance of the externally acquired firms. Some important differences in the firms' acquisition and nurturing processes are also identified and discussed.
