Review on progress of phenols−ammonia recovery process in coal chemical wastewater

Abstract

Coal chemical wastewater (CCW) is a significant challenge in industrial wastewater treatment due to its complex composition and high concentrations of refractory pollutants. Drawing on a comprehensive investigation of industry practices and engineering experience, this review analyzes the origins of key toxic substances in CCW and highlights the critical role of phenols−ammonia recovery (P&AR). It reviews recent advances in P&AR processes, and describes the technical principles and applications of core treatment methods, including steam stripping and liquid−liquid extraction. A range of improvement strategies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing resource recovery are also discussed. This review evaluates the strengths and limitations of existing P&AR processes to identify core treatment solutions suitable for the sustainable development of modern coal chemical enterprises. The objective is to provide technical support and strategic guidance for achieving efficient treatment and resource recovery from CCW.
