Studies on the effect of mean wind speed profile on the height of air layer affected by buildings

Abstract

The paper gives an account of the extent to which free flow of wind is affected by a building, and culminates in the prediction of influence of velocity profile of on-blowing wind on the height of air layer affected by buildings. It is established that the power law exponent describing the vertical velocity gradient in the incident wind has a bearing on the height of Building Affected Air Layer (BAL). An increase in the value of power law exponent results in an increase in the BAL height in the regions on the windward and leeward sides of the buildings. The increase is more pronounced at points close to the buildings and diminishes at further points. However, in the distant region along the sides of buildings, the increase in the height of BAL occurs only on leeward locations at distances greater than twice the height of the building. At the rest of the other points, the height of BAL decreases with an increase in the value of the power law exponent. Furthermore, changes produced in the BAL height are of higher magnitude on the leeward side of a building compared with the changes on the windward side.
