Advances in production economics: Insights, challenges, and future directions

Abstract

Nowadays, industry faces numerous challenges in the context of post-pandemic operations, ranging from sustainable development and energy transition to geopolitical tensions, new business models, digitalization, data analytics, artificial intelligence, the sharing economy, and platform-based operations. These challenges are also under active investigation in the field of Production Economics. Inspired by the special issue on Advances in Production Economics, the purpose of this paper is to discuss current research trends and to outline a possible research agenda. The paper aims to bring together researchers’ perspectives on emerging challenges within Production Economics, which serves as an interface between engineering and economics/management. The ultimate objective is to foster knowledge that improves industrial practice and strengthens the methodological and theoretical foundations for informed decision-making. Accordingly, we review key challenges, identify emerging research directions, and offer an outlook on future developments in Production Economics.
