Temperature, heat, and work, for a system of two coupled oscillators

Abstract

A system is studied which consists of two oscillators, coupled through an arbitrary force depending on the relative position of the oscillators. Each of the oscillators is in thermal contact with a heat reservoir. Each oscillator is assumed to have the same temperature as the heat reservoir the oscillator is in thermal contact with. This is possible only when their other interactions are small, which is assumed to be the case. The heat reservoirs are modeled by independent white noises. In addition to these, each oscillator is subjected to an external macroscopic force. It is shown that under these circumstances, the system cannot work as a heat pump (getting heat from the cold reservoir and delivering it to the hot reservoir) or an engine (delivering work).
