Abstract

The phase diagrams of a disordered interface consisting of two mixed layers between two semi-infinite spin-12 Ising ferromagnets (A and B) in a transverse field are investigated by the use of the effective-field theory. We have obtained some interesting results. (i) For zero transverse field, the increase of thickness in the interface with alloying disorder Ap − B1−p does not change the possibility of interface magnetism. (ii) In a finite transverse field, the critical exchange interaction at which the interface magnetism can appear may be affected severely, especially for the systems with pure (p = 0 and p = 1) interfaces, although the critical value of the disordered interface with 0.3⩽ p ⩽0.9 does not deviate so much from that of zero transverse field. (iii) The possibility of observing the interface magnetism experimentally is also proposed, applying a large transverse field.
